THE TAKEAWAY, BEFORE THE SCROLL

Explain the problem, what you contributed, and the outcome you can support. Specific work is useful evidence even when you do not have a numerical result.

Use a substantial project to show how you solve a problem. Select an example relevant to the role and explain your own contribution clearly.

Choose evidence you can explain

Describe the starting problem, what you changed, and what happened. A useful result might be a released feature, a completed migration, a resolved customer problem, or a measured improvement. Include numbers only when you know their source and the comparison they represent.

Here is a fictional example: “Migrated the inventory import to a validated batch process, added a report for rejected rows, and documented recovery steps for operations staff.” It identifies ownership and deliverables without inventing a percentage.

Match the scope to your role

For a junior engineer, explain the component you implemented and how you tested it. For a senior engineer, explain relevant design decisions and delivery responsibility. For a staff engineer, describe the cross-team problem and your contribution to the shared approach. These are writing prompts, not mandatory titles or a ranking formula.

Operational work can also provide strong evidence. Reliability, support, scheduling, and coordination may be central requirements of the job. Keep them when relevant and describe the value accurately.
