A resume is a selection of relevant experience. It does not need to list every task, but it should represent your work truthfully.
Editorial correction, September 22, 2026: an earlier version claimed that 90% of resumes shared a particular weakness without a supporting dataset. That claim has been removed.
Start with the role
Identify responsibilities and qualifications in the job description. Choose examples that show where you have done related work. Do not assume that administrative tasks or collaboration are less valuable than individual project work. Their relevance depends on the job.

Everything is asking for attention.
Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Explain your contribution
A fictional example such as “Maintained the support handoff log and followed up on unresolved customer issues before the weekly review” explains more than “Attended meetings.” It does not require an invented revenue figure.
For team projects, distinguish what the team delivered from what you owned. Include an outcome when you can substantiate it. If a result was not measured, describe the delivered work rather than assigning it an estimated percentage.

Keep necessary context
Editing should remove repetition, not make the timeline misleading. Keep employers, role titles, and dates clear. Include relevant qualifications even when they do not fit a single project narrative.
Ask a reader unfamiliar with your work what they understand from each example. Revise statements that leave ownership or purpose unclear. This is a writing exercise, not a prediction of a hiring decision.
