A resume can look readable while its extracted text separates information differently. The useful question is what happens to your exported file, rather than whether a layout category is always safe or always broken.
Editorial correction, September 22, 2026: an earlier version reported a 10,000-resume study and layout failure percentages without supporting artifacts. Those claims have been withdrawn. We have not established how widely any open-source parser is used by employers.
Check the file you will submit
- Open the exported document and confirm that the text is selectable.
- Copy the text into a plain text editor. Look for missing characters and sections appearing in an unexpected order.
- Check that your email, phone number, employer, job title, and dates remain distinguishable.
- Upload to the employer's form when ready, then review the populated fields before submitting.
Copying text is a useful spot check. It does not reproduce every employer's parser or prove that the application form will populate correctly.
Same story. A little more breathing room.
Switch the layout. Watch how spacing and hierarchy change the way this sample reads.

Everything is asking for attention.
Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Columns are a test condition, not a verdict
For a document with a sidebar, inspect whether sidebar text interrupts a sentence or a job entry. If it does, try moving the essential information into the main column and compare the next export. Keep the version that preserves the information you need.
Do not infer rejection from a formatting warning. A warning describes a document characteristic or an extraction result, not a hiring decision.

What Guul has measured
Our published parsing evidence includes six fictional fixtures, their input files, and extracted outputs. In that run, the two-column fixture preserved the checked section order. The contact-spacing fixture exposed a boundary problem. Neither result estimates failure rates for real resumes or for a named ATS vendor.
Check your resume, inspect the findings, and verify the final employer form yourself.
