Should You Add 10th and 12th Marks and CGPA to Your Resume?

For freshers in India, school marks and CGPA often decide eligibility before anyone reads your projects. Here is when to include them, how to write them clearly, and when to take them off.

THE TAKEAWAY, BEFORE THE SCROLL

Freshers should list 10th, 12th and degree scores with their scale and year; after a few years of work, keep the degree and drop school marks unless an employer asks for them.

Indian campus and off-campus hiring often uses academic scores as an eligibility check. A posting may say "60% or 6.0 CGPA throughout, no active backlogs", and the application form may ask for each score separately. Advice written for the US, where school marks never appear on a resume, does not fit this. Advice copied from a senior's 2015 resume may not fit either.

This guide gives a simple rule by career stage, shows how to write each line so nobody has to guess the scale, and covers the awkward cases: a low score, a gap year, a backlog, and CBSE's old CGPA marksheets.

The short rule by career stage

Final-year students and freshers (0–1 year of work): include your degree score, your 12th (or diploma) score and your 10th score. Many service companies and campus drives screen on all three, and a recruiter comparing against the posting should not have to open your marksheets to check.

One to three years of experience: keep the degree score. School marks are optional; include them if the roles you target still list school percentages in their eligibility criteria (some large IT services employers and public sector units do). Otherwise remove them to make room for work.

Three or more years of experience: keep the degree, college and year. Drop school marks. Drop the degree score too, unless it is strong or the employer asks. At this stage, what you did at work is the evidence people read.

Postgraduates (M.Tech, MBA, MCA): list the postgraduate score first, then the undergraduate score. Add 10th and 12th while you are applying as a fresher from the programme, because campus eligibility often covers every level.

When a posting or a campus template says what to include, follow it. Your college's placement cell may require a fixed format with every score, and that format wins inside the placement process.

How to write each line

The goal is that anyone can read the score without guessing what it is out of. Always show the scale, the institution and the year.

A clear fresher education block looks like this (fictional example):

  • B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering, ABC Institute of Technology, Pune — 2025 — CGPA 7.9/10
  • Class XII (CBSE), XYZ Senior Secondary School, Nagpur — 2021 — 88.4%
  • Class X (CBSE), XYZ Senior Secondary School, Nagpur — 2019 — 91.2%

Some details that make a difference:

  • Write "CGPA 7.9/10", not "7.9". A bare number is read as a percentage by some people and some software.
  • Use the same order everywhere: degree, then 12th or diploma, then 10th. Newest first is what readers expect.
  • Name the board (CBSE, ICSE, or your state board). It helps a reader compare scores, because boards grade differently.
  • Write the year you passed, not a range, for school. For a degree still in progress, write "2026 (expected)".
  • Keep the score and year on the same line as the institution. When they sit in separate columns, extracted text can separate them, and a form may pull the wrong year.
DON’T JUST READ IT. PLAY WITH IT.

Converting CGPA to percentage

Only convert when someone asks you to, and use the official method for your board or university.

For CBSE Class X CGPA marksheets (issued roughly from 2010 until the board returned to marks), CBSE's own circular gives an indicative conversion: overall percentage = 9.5 × CGPA (CBSE circular 24/2010). So a CGPA of 9.6 is indicatively 91.2%. CBSE calls this "indicative"; if a form asks for CGPA, give CGPA.

Universities use different formulas, and some print the conversion on the grade card or in their regulations. Do not use a formula from a random calculator site and do not round up. If you are unsure, write the CGPA with its scale and add the percentage only when the university gives it: "CGPA 7.9/10 (73.5% per university conversion)".

If a form asks for a percentage and you only have a CGPA, use your university's official conversion and keep the document that shows it. A score you cannot back with a marksheet is worse than a lower score you can.

Where the education block goes

For freshers, education usually goes near the top, after a two-line summary and before projects. It is the section most likely to be checked first.

Once you have a year or more of relevant work, move education below experience. The recruiter's first question changes from "is this candidate eligible?" to "what have they done?", and the page should answer that first.

Two layout points matter for how software reads the block:

  1. Keep it in the main column, not in a sidebar. Sidebars are sometimes extracted after the main text or merged with nearby lines.
  2. Use the heading "Education", not a creative label. Recognisable headings help both systems and people find the section.

If you want to check how your education lines come out as text, Guul's resume checker shows what it extracted and flags dates or scores that ended up in the wrong place. For India, its previews simulate Workday-family and Taleo-family parsing; it does not simulate Naukri, Zoho Recruit, Darwinbox or Keka.

Awkward cases

A low score in one level. Include it anyway if the employer's form will ask for it; leaving it off only delays the question. Balance it with stronger evidence elsewhere, such as a well-described project, an internship or a relevant certification you actually completed. Do not change the scale or round the number to cross a cut-off.

Active or cleared backlogs. A resume does not need a backlog count. If a form asks, answer truthfully. If you cleared a backlog, your final CGPA already reflects it.

A gap between 12th and your degree, or during it. Keep the real years on each line. If the gap was for exam preparation, illness or family reasons, one plain line is enough in the right place, for example "2021–2022: Prepared for JEE Advanced". You do not need to justify it at length on the page.

Diploma holders (lateral entry). List the diploma instead of, or in addition to, Class XII, with its board or institute, year and percentage.

Studying abroad or applying abroad. Overseas employers usually do not expect school marks. See the India vs US resume format checklist for which Indian conventions to drop.

A quick check before you send it

  • Every score has a scale (% or /10) and a year.
  • The order is newest first.
  • The numbers match your marksheets exactly.
  • The education block sits where the reader expects it for your stage: near the top for freshers, below experience after that.
  • Nothing about your education is inside an image or a table cell that might not extract.
