Choose Resume Typography for Readability

Review fonts, spacing, and exports without claiming that a font proves competence or improves an offer.

THE TAKEAWAY, BEFORE THE SCROLL

Choose readable type, keep a consistent hierarchy, and inspect the exported file. Font choices support clarity; they do not prove professional competence.

Choose typography that keeps your experience readable. A typeface cannot establish your qualifications, and we do not have evidence that choosing a Guul font changes an employer's competence rating or salary offer.

Editorial correction, September 22, 2026: an earlier version described an unnamed intelligence study and made claims about font-driven hiring judgments. Those unsupported claims have been removed.

Use a consistent hierarchy

Make your name, section headings, role headings, and body text distinguishable. Use the same treatment for equivalent information throughout the document. A heading should help someone find a section rather than compete with the content beneath it.

Both serif and sans-serif fonts can be appropriate. Evaluate the actual size, weight, and spacing instead of treating a font family as a measure of professionalism.

DON’T JUST READ IT. PLAY WITH IT.

Same story. A little more breathing room.

Switch the layout. Watch how spacing and hierarchy change the way this sample reads.

Same words. Different presentation.

Everything is asking for attention.

Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.

Inspect the smallest text

Check dates, contact details, and footnotes at normal zoom. Avoid using a smaller size simply to force additional material onto one page. Edit repetitive content or choose a layout with more suitable spacing.

Keep emphasis selective. If every sentence is bold, emphasis stops distinguishing the details you want noticed. Check that colors remain legible on the page and in a printed copy if print is relevant.

Compare the exported file

Open the exported document and look for changed wrapping, missing characters, clipped lines, and unexpected page breaks. Select and copy a sample of text to inspect extraction. A visual preview does not prove that every reader or parser receives identical information.

If you change the font or layout, repeat the check on the new export. The earlier file's result does not automatically apply to the revised one.

Keep outcomes separate from presentation

Readable presentation supports your explanation of the work. It cannot replace truthful evidence of that work or guarantee an interview. Our published extraction checks show specific document observations, not measurements of hiring preference.
