THE TAKEAWAY, BEFORE THE SCROLL

Treat the CV and application form as two views of the same experience. Keep facts fixed, then choose the detail that answers each question.

A graduate application may ask for a CV and separate written answers. Repeating the same paragraph in every field can leave the question unanswered. Rewriting everything from memory creates another problem: dates, responsibilities and results can drift between documents.

University College Cork’s application-form guidance distinguishes motivation and competency questions. Use the employer’s current questions as your starting point. There is no single application form required by every Irish graduate employer.

Build one evidence sheet before drafting

List education, projects, placements, work and volunteering. Preserve official qualification names and real dates. This is private working material, not an extra attachment the employer necessarily wants.

Evidence to record Why it helps What to avoid
Situation and task Gives an answer context A long unrelated history
Your actions Separates your work from the team’s Claiming you led work you assisted
Result or learning Explains what changed Invented percentages or awards
Dates and status Keeps documents consistent Calling an unfinished qualification complete

Choose examples you can discuss without disclosing confidential work. A classroom project is valid evidence when its context is clear. It does not need to become a fictional client engagement.

Turn the evidence sheet into a readable CV

Select entries relevant to the opening. Describe what you did, with consistent headings and dates. Put the most relevant education, work or project evidence where the reader can find it.

Follow the vacancy’s document and length requirements. If none are given, keep the CV focused on relevant evidence and remove repetition before shrinking the text. An academic application may need a fuller record of research, teaching and publications.

Answer the question the form actually asks

“Why this employer?” needs a reason connected to the real role. “Describe a time you solved a problem” needs an event, your actions and a result. Research the employer through its own pages and avoid unsupported claims about its culture.

Draft longer answers outside the form and check its stated length limit. Inspect the pasted text too; formatting and character counts can differ. Do not assume an uploaded CV replaces required fields.

Compare the final attachments and form

Compare qualification status, titles, dates and contact details. If asked for referees, obtain permission and use the requested channel. Avoid publishing another person’s details in a public CV or portfolio.

Keep the submitted version and question wording in your application record. This helps you prepare for an interview without confusing it with a newer draft. Inspect the actual PDF and use the text extraction check to review its reading order.
