This guide is written in English for candidates applying to jobs in Italy. While international firms in Milan, Rome and Turin frequently accept English CVs, many Italian employers require an Italian curriculum vitae and cover letter (lettera di presentazione). Always read the vacancy instructions first.
Review the vacancy for format, language and privacy instructions
Italian job adverts sometimes specify a format (such as Europass for certain public-sector competitions) or ask candidates to include a short data-processing consent note at the foot of the CV referencing GDPR (EU Regulation 2016/679) and Italian Legislative Decree 196/2003 as amended by Legislative Decree 101/2018. Follow the exact wording or checkbox mechanism used by the employer.
| Decision | What to verify in the vacancy | Your preparation step |
|---|---|---|
| Language | Whether Italian, English or both are requested | Draft consistently in the language named in the advert |
| Format rule | Public-competition Europass rule vs. private-sector CV | Use the mandated format if required; otherwise keep a concise A4 layout |
| Privacy note | Whether a footer consent statement is requested | Add the requested GDPR/D.Lgs. consent line or complete the portal consent box |
| Qualifications | Degree titles, grades and professional registration | Keep original university and credential names accurate |
| Attachments | Cover letter, portfolio or certificate uploads | Attach only the files requested and verify file sizes |
Choose between Europass and a concise A4 CV
Unless an institution or public tender explicitly mandates Europass, private-sector recruiters usually prefer a concise 1-to-2 page A4 CV that highlights recent work experience, measurable outcomes and core technical or domain skills without multi-page grid boilerplate.
If you are converting an older Europass file into a compact layout, follow our guide to moving from Europass and compare localized tools in the Italian-language resume builder options guide.

Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Keep qualifications, dates and language levels accurate
List work experience and education in reverse-chronological order with MM/yyyy or month-year dates. Do not alter official degree titles or claim recognition under Italian regulated professions (albi professionali) unless you hold that registration.
Separate self-assessed language skills (such as CEFR B2 or C1) from certified examination results, and keep any optional photograph or personal details from crowding your experience section.
Inspect your exported PDF and application package
Open every file in your application package to verify that your name, dates, job titles and contact links match across your CV, cover letter and online form.
Use the PDF text check to inspect the text extracted from your PDF in your browser, and review the employer’s portal fields before submitting your application.
