A service-company role can contain valuable engineering, analysis and delivery work. The resume task is to make your actual contribution understandable to someone who does not know your client, internal team names or project codes.
Do not replace your formal title with “Product Engineer” simply because that is the role you want next. Preserve the title and use the description to show the relevant work. This guide describes an editing method, not a claim that all product companies evaluate candidates in the same way.
Translate responsibilities into evidence
Start with an inventory of the systems, users or processes you worked on. For each item, ask what you personally implemented, analysed, tested or operated. Separate your actions from the team's wider deliverable.
Fictional teaching example, before: “Worked on client tickets and production support.”
Same fictional facts, clearer: “Investigated failed nightly imports, traced malformed input records and documented the recovery procedure used by the support team.”
The second sentence explains work without inventing a percentage improvement, a leadership role or a new system. If you have measured results, add them with their real basis. If you do not, explain the verified output and its use.
Same story. A little more breathing room.

Everything is asking for attention.
Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Make technical choices visible
A list of tools says little about how you used them. Describe a relevant choice, constraint or trade-off. You might explain how you checked a fix, handled an unreliable dependency or separated a recurring issue from a one-off incident.
| Broad phrase | Question to answer before rewriting |
|---|---|
| Worked on APIs | Which endpoint or integration did you change, and why? |
| Improved performance | What was measured, under what conditions? |
| Collaborated with stakeholders | What decision or deliverable required that collaboration? |
| Owned a module | What responsibility did you actually hold? |
Only include information you are allowed to share. Use a general description of confidential work rather than naming a client or publishing proprietary details without permission.
Separate side projects from professional delivery
A personal project can demonstrate a skill you have not used in employment. Label it as personal or academic and explain its scope. A prototype is still useful evidence when its limits are clear.
Do not describe a tutorial implementation as a commercial launch. If you adapted an existing project, explain your own additions. Keep public links current and be ready to discuss how the work functions.
Choose a structure around the target role
For an experienced applicant, lead with the most relevant recent work, then supporting projects and qualifications. A short summary can explain the direction of the move without declaring experience you do not yet have. Use the actual vacancy to decide which evidence deserves space.
Check whether several bullet points repeat the same responsibility. Replace repetition with another relevant contribution or shorten the section. A product-oriented resume should still be a readable account of your real career.
Use the experienced applicant guide for organising promotions and earlier roles. The software engineer example can help with structure, while the fact-checking guide helps review AI rewrites before sending.
