An applicant tracking system (ATS) can be part of the process used to collect and review applications. You cannot infer an employer's full review process from the name of its software.
Editorial correction, September 22, 2026: this article previously described specific vendors as using one universal semantic ranking algorithm. We do not have evidence for that claim. The advice below is writing guidance, not a reconstruction of a vendor's private ranking system.
Use the job description as a relevance check
Read the responsibilities and required experience. Identify which requirements you can support with work, education, or projects. Use the employer's terminology when it accurately describes that experience. Do not add a technology or qualification you have not used merely to match a phrase.
A skills list names your tools. A work example explains how you used them. Both can help a reviewer understand what you can contribute.
Same story. A little more breathing room.

Everything is asking for attention.
Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Replace vague claims with context
Here is a fictional writing example:
- Vague: “Experienced in Python.”
- More specific: “Built a Python validation script for weekly inventory imports and documented how operations staff handle rejected rows.”
The second sentence identifies work and ownership. It is not a claim that any particular phrase earns ranking points. Add measured results only when you can explain the source and your contribution.

Keep structure recognizable
Use clear headings such as Experience, Education, and Skills. Keep employers, titles, and dates together. Review the exported text and any fields populated by the application form.
Hidden keywords and repeated phrases cannot establish qualifications. They can also make the document harder for a person to assess.
Interpret checker results carefully
Guul's findings help you inspect your document. Modeled ATS-family previews are simulations, not authenticated tests inside Workday, Greenhouse, or an employer account. A favorable score cannot promise an interview or reproduce a hiring decision.
