THE TAKEAWAY, BEFORE THE SCROLL

Start from the employer’s vacancy instructions on language, page count and cover letter format. Keep diplomas and experience dates accurate on A4 and verify the extracted text before submitting.

This guide is written in English for candidates applying to roles in France. An English CV is common in international tech, finance and research teams, while many French employers expect both the CV and the cover letter (lettre de motivation) in French. Always follow the language and file instructions in the vacancy notice.

Build a checklist from the job advert

Before formatting your document, separate what the employer explicitly requests from generic online habits. Do not attach identity documents, diplomas or transcripts unless the application form asks for them.

Decision What to verify in the vacancy Your preparation step
Language Whether the advert requests French, English or both Draft the CV and letter in the requested language
Page length Concise 1-page or 2-page A4 expectation Keep recent experience and measurable outcomes prominent
Cover letter Whether a lettre de motivation is required or optional Connect your verifiable history to the company’s stated needs
Diplomas & titles How degree levels and job scopes are described Keep original institution names and add clear context where helpful
File format PDF vs. Word upload fields in the applicant portal Export on A4 and check every portal field after upload

Structure an A4 CV that preserves French and international qualifications

French recruiters typically scan reverse-chronological work history, education and language proficiency first. Use an A4 layout with clear section headings, consistent MM/yyyy or month-year dates, and direct bullet points showing what you delivered.

When listing degrees earned outside France—or explaining French Grandes Écoles, Master or Licence credentials to an international hiring manager—write the exact credential name awarded by the institution. You may add a short parenthetical note on duration or level, but do not claim an official state equivalence unless you hold one.

Inspect the chronological classic template for a clean single-column A4 structure, or review the French-language resume builder options guide when comparing localized tools.

Handle photos, personal details and language levels deliberately

While headshots are still seen on many French CVs, anti-discrimination rules and multinational hiring practices mean a photo is an optional choice rather than a universal requirement. Never let a photo or decorative sidebar crowd out your work history or push text into narrow columns that read out of order.

State your French and English proficiency honestly using a recognized scale such as CEFR (B2, C1, C2) alongside any formal test scores you hold. Do not use automated rewriting to inflate conversational ability into bilingual fluency.

Inspect the complete application package before sending

Open your exported A4 PDF and compare your job titles, dates and contact details across your CV, your lettre de motivation and the online application form. Use clear filenames such as FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf.

Run your file through the PDF text check to inspect the raw text extracted from your PDF in your browser, and double-check the employer’s application fields yourself before submitting.
