This guide is written in English for candidates applying to jobs in Switzerland. Multinational headquarters, banking, pharma and engineering teams in Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne often accept English applications, while many employers expect a German Lebenslauf, a French curriculum vitae or an Italian curriculum vitae matching the language of the job advert.
Check the vacancy for language and dossier requirements
Swiss employers frequently ask for a complete application dossier (Bewerbungsdossier / dossier de candidature) that includes your CV, a motivation letter, diplomas and past employer reference letters (Arbeitszeugnisse / certificats de travail). Always verify which documents the portal requests.
| Decision | What to verify in the vacancy | Your preparation step |
|---|---|---|
| Language | English, German, French or Italian advert instructions | Draft your CV and letter in the language requested by the employer |
| Document length | 2-to-3 page A4 CV depending on experience | Present recent roles, achievements and qualifications clearly |
| Work certificates | Whether Arbeitszeugnisse / certificats de travail are requested | Ensure dates and titles on your CV match your certificates |
| Permit / location | Whether work-permit status (B, C, G, EU/EFTA) is asked |
State your factual status accurately if requested |
| References | How referee contact details are collected | Provide referee details when requested and with their consent |
Format an A4 CV or Lebenslauf across Swiss language regions
Use an A4 layout with reverse-chronological work experience and education. Because Swiss hiring teams cross-check CV timelines against attached Arbeitszeugnisse and diplomas, every date (MM.yyyy or month-year), job title and institution name on your CV must match your supporting documents word for word.
Keep official qualification names intact (such as EFZ / CFC, Federal Diploma, Bachelor or Master) and state your German, French, Italian and English levels accurately using CEFR (B2, C1, C2).

Closely packed headings and text leave fewer visual signposts. Try the other treatment.
Verify your complete application dossier before submitting
Open each PDF in your dossier to check legibility, page order and filename clarity before uploading to the employer’s portal. Never include sensitive tax or social-security numbers (AHV / AVS) on a CV.
Run your CV through the PDF text check to inspect the extracted text in your browser, and review every field in the employer’s online form before submitting.
