Mobile Engineering Lead
[Company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I own Android development end to end for Harborline Financial's Kotlin app, which serves 1.2 million monthly active users at a 4.7-star Play Store rating and a 99.4% crash-free session rate. I'm applying for your Android Developer role because a fintech app at that scale doesn't tolerate a sloppy release, and I'm looking for a team that holds the same bar.

Over the last two years I migrated 22 screens from XML Views to Jetpack Compose, cutting our UI code by 35% and bringing typical feature delivery from two sprints down to one. Separately, shrinking our APK from 48MB to 19MB through R8 optimization and modularization lifted install conversion 18% in the emerging markets where every extra megabyte costs a download.

I work daily in Kotlin with Coroutines and Compose, built our offline-first architecture on Room and WorkManager, and hold the Google Associate Android Developer certification. I lead a five-engineer Android guild where we raised unit test coverage from 41% to 78%, and I still review every pull request that touches a shared module.

I'd welcome the chance to talk through the Compose migration and the guild's testing practices in more detail, or to work through a take-home if that's part of how [Company name] evaluates Android candidates. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Drew Johnson

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

Leads with Play Store metrics, not job titles

Active users, star rating and crash-free rate give a mobile lead an instant, credible sense of scale and quality bar before reading another line.

  2. Paragraph 2

Two separate wins, each with its own number

Separating the Compose migration from the APK-size cut, each with its own measured result, shows range across UI work and release engineering in one paragraph.

  3. Paragraph 3

Leadership proven with a coverage number

Leading a guild is a claim; raising unit test coverage from 41% to 78% under that leadership is the evidence that makes the claim believable.

Questions about Android developer cover letters

Should I mention both Kotlin and Java experience in an Android cover letter?

Lead with Kotlin since it signals current practice, and mention Java only briefly if you have real production experience with it. A line about migrating legacy Java to Kotlin is a strong, specific detail to include.

Is it worth mentioning Play Store metrics like crash-free rate?

Yes. Crash-free session rates, active user counts or star ratings give a hiring manager a fast, credible signal of real-world impact, which reads as far more convincing than describing your work only in terms of features shipped.

Should I address device fragmentation in the letter?

Only briefly, and only if the role clearly deals with a wide device matrix, such as a consumer or fintech app. One sentence about your testing approach or minimum supported API level is enough; save the rest for the interview.
