Dear [Hiring manager's name],
I'm in my third year on the tenure track teaching Introduction to Communication, Public Speaking and a research methods seminar at Palisade College, where I also advise 14 majors and co-chair our department's assessment committee. I'm applying to your assistant professor opening because the posting's balance of teaching load and a real research agenda is the combination I want to keep building toward tenure.
My public speaking sections now use a peer-coached practice round before every graded speech, and student anxiety self-ratings on our end-of-course survey dropped by nearly a third while final-speech grades rose half a letter grade on average. I also published two peer-reviewed articles on classroom communication apprehension in my first two years and presented at both National Communication Association conferences.
I hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, serve as faculty advisor to our student media organization, and I've secured two internal grants totaling $8,400 to fund undergraduate research assistants. I sit on our general education redesign committee, where I've pushed for more speaking-intensive courses outside our own department.
I'd welcome a conversation about your department's teaching needs and current research priorities and how my classroom-anxiety work could contribute at [University name]. I'm glad to share my publication list and teaching portfolio whenever it's useful.
Sincerely,
Marco Jackson, Ph.D.
