VP of Sales
[Company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

At Keystone Industrial Supply I manage a four-county Ohio territory of 180 active industrial accounts, carrying a $1.4 million quota that I closed 2024 at 127%, or $1.78 million. I'm applying for this sales representative role because your territories still reward a rep who builds relationships face to face rather than managing accounts entirely through email.

I grew this territory from $2.1 million to $3.1 million in two years by reactivating 38 lapsed accounts and adding 52 net-new logos through cold field prospecting, running 12 to 15 in-person visits a week on an optimized route. I was named Salesperson of the Year in 2023, ranking first among 40 territory reps nationally.

I log every touch in Salesforce the same day, with staged next steps, and my forecast accuracy has stayed within 5% of actuals for 10 consecutive quarters. I hold a CPSP certification and I'm comfortable qualifying with BANT on a first call instead of waiting until the second meeting to find out a deal isn't real.

I'd welcome the opportunity to bring that same territory discipline to [Company name], and I'm happy to walk through my account list and results in an interview. Thank you for considering my background.

Thank you,

Reese Johnson

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

Quota attainment stated as an exact figure

Naming 127% against a specific dollar quota, rather than a vague 'exceeded targets,' gives a VP of sales an immediately checkable number instead of a claim they have to take on faith.

  2. Paragraph 2

Growth number paired with a national ranking

The territory's two-year growth shows sustained performance, while the national ranking against 40 peers shows that growth held up in relative, not just absolute, terms.

  3. Paragraph 3

Forecast accuracy proves discipline beyond selling

A tight forecast accuracy over ten quarters tells a sales leader this rep's pipeline data can be trusted for planning, which is a different and valuable skill from closing ability alone.

Questions about sales representative cover letters

How do I write a sales cover letter without a quota or sales experience?

Choose an actual example of understanding a customer’s need, explaining a product, organising follow-up or resolving a concern. State your contribution and what happened. You do not need to invent revenue or a quota. Connect that evidence to the duties in the vacancy and explain why you want to move into sales.

Which sales numbers should I include?

Use a figure you can explain accurately, with its time period and whether it describes you or a team. Keep quota attainment separate from territory revenue and company growth. If records are incomplete, describe the work instead of estimating a percentage. Replace every figure in Reese’s fictional example with your own supported evidence or remove it.

How should I adapt the letter for retail, inside sales or field sales?

Let the opening’s duties guide your choice of example. Retail work may emphasise product advice and service; inside sales may involve remote prospecting and follow-up; field sales may involve visits and territory planning. These are editorial prompts, not universal role definitions. Use the employer’s wording only where it truthfully describes your experience.

Can I share an account list or customer revenue in an application?

Do not include confidential account lists, customer contact details or restricted commercial figures. Describe your method and use results you are permitted to discuss. Before offering work samples, confirm that you can share them. An interview request does not itself give permission to disclose an employer’s information.

Should my cover letter name a CRM or sales methodology?

Name a tool or method when you have used it and it matters to the role. Explain the activity, such as keeping next steps current, instead of listing acronyms alone. Do not copy Salesforce, BANT or certification claims from the fictional example unless they describe you.
