Welding Shop Foreman
[Fabrication or energy services company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I weld carbon steel and stainless process pipe from 2 to 24 inches for an energy services fabricator in Baton Rouge, running GTAW root passes with SMAW fill and cap to ASME Section IX procedures. I'm applying for your Welder opening because the posting's mix of pipe and structural welding code work matches exactly the scope I already run day to day.

I've passed 99.4% of more than 2,300 X-rayed and UT-tested joints over the past two years, with zero repairs on stainless GTAW work, and I qualified 6G on chrome-moly within four months of hire, joining the five-welder crew that handles the shop's high-pressure boiler work. When fitters run short-handed, I fit and tack spools from isometric drawings myself, keeping the fabrication line at more than 40 spools a week.

I hold AWS certification in SMAW and GTAW at the 6G position on carbon steel pipe, plus AWS D1.1 qualification on FCAW and GMAW plate in all positions, and current confined space entry training. I maintain torch, purge and consumable logs that have passed every third-party audit without a finding.

I'd like to bring that same pass rate and code range to [Fabrication or energy services company name]. I'm available for an interview and can weld a test coupon whenever it suits your schedule.

Sincerely,

Casey Martin

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

States pipe size range and code together

A welding foreman wants to know both the pipe diameter range and the exact code procedure used. Naming both the 2-to-24-inch range and ASME Section IX shows this welder is ready for comparable code work immediately.

  2. Paragraph 2

A pass rate across a specific joint count is real proof

Passing 99.4% of more than 2,300 X-rayed and UT-tested joints is a specific, verifiable quality claim, and qualifying on chrome-moly within four months shows this welder picks up new materials fast.

  3. Paragraph 3

Names both pipe and plate certifications together

AWS 6G pipe certification alongside AWS D1.1 plate qualification in all positions shows a foreman this welder can be assigned to either pipe or structural work without a new weld test.

Questions about welder cover letters

Should a welder cover letter repeat every certification already on the resume?

No. Name your one or two most relevant qualifications, the process, position, and code that match the posting, in the opening paragraph, then let the resume carry the full list. Repeating everything makes the letter read like a duplicate document instead of a pitch.

How long should a welder cover letter be?

Three short paragraphs, well under a page. Foremen reading applications for a fabrication opening want the qualification match and a pass-rate number, not an extended narrative about your interest in welding as a craft.

What if the job posting doesn't ask for a cover letter?

Send a short one anyway when applying online rather than walking in with a resume in hand. A few sentences naming your code qualifications and offering to weld a test coupon costs little time and can move your application to the top of the stack.

Should I mention qualifying on a new material quickly, like chrome-moly?

Yes. Naming how fast you qualified on a harder material shows a foreman you can be moved onto specialized crews without a long ramp-up, which matters for shops that run a mix of standard and high-pressure work.
