Dear [Hiring manager's name],
Last summer at Fernwood Apps, a five-person startup, I was the only intern on a team small enough that my code went straight to production the same week I wrote it, which taught me more about real engineering tradeoffs than two years of coursework had. I'm applying to [Company name]'s internship because I want to keep learning at that same speed, on a team with more experienced engineers to learn from.
I built a notification-preferences feature that shipped to all 8,000 of Fernwood's active users, and after noticing our email open rate sitting at 11%, I proposed and built a send-time optimization that raised it to 19% over the following month. Outside of that, a class scheduling app I built for fellow students is now used by about 600 people at my university every semester.
I'm most comfortable in Python and JavaScript, picked up React and a fair amount of SQL on the job at Fernwood, and I'm currently taking algorithms and database systems courses that I try to immediately apply to whatever I'm building. I contribute to one open-source project on GitHub and have started reading pull requests there just to learn how experienced engineers give feedback.
I'd welcome the chance to talk about what [Company name]'s engineering interns typically work on and where someone who ships fast and asks a lot of questions could contribute. I'm available for an interview at your convenience. Thank you for considering my application.
Thank you,
Taylor Davis
