Head of Research
[Company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

At Northfield Analytics I own the research roadmap for a B2B SaaS platform used by 40,000-plus seats, running 30 to 35 studies a year across generative discovery and evaluative testing. I am applying to [Company name]'s UX Researcher opening because I want to bring that roadmap-level research ownership to a product with an even broader base of use cases.

A mixed-methods study I led, combining 22 interviews with a 640-response survey, reversed a planned navigation overhaul before development began, saving the team months of wasted engineering work. I also built a screened participant panel of 1,400-plus users across six industry segments, cutting average recruitment turnaround from nine days to two.

I launched a Dovetail-based research repository tagging 260-plus historical studies, cutting duplicate research requests 45% across five product teams, and I hold a Nielsen Norman Group UX certification with a CXPA credential in progress. Mentoring two associate researchers and coaching eight product managers on running their own lightweight studies has scaled research capacity well past what I could do alone.

I would welcome the chance to walk through that navigation study and hear how [Company name] structures its own research roadmap. I can bring study details and outcome data to a first conversation. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,

Priya Harris

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

States roadmap ownership and product scale together

A head of research wants proof of strategic ownership, not just study execution. Naming roadmap responsibility and seat count shows that scope in the first line.

  2. Paragraph 2

A reversed decision is the clearest research proof point

A study that changed a real roadmap decision before costly engineering work began is a far stronger proof point than a study that only produced a report.

  3. Paragraph 3

Shows research scaling beyond one researcher's own hands

A repository that cut duplicate requests plus PMs coached to run their own studies proves this researcher multiplies the whole team's research capacity.

Questions about UX researcher cover letters

Should a UX researcher cover letter include a portfolio link?

Yes, but treat it as supporting evidence, not the letter's substance. Describe one study and its outcome in the body text itself, since many reviewers won't click through before deciding whether to keep reading.

How much research methodology detail belongs in a cover letter?

Very little. Name the method in a few words (interviews, unmoderated testing, a survey) and spend the rest of the sentence on sample size and outcome. Panels can assess methods rigor from your portfolio.

What if my research didn't change a shipped decision?

Describe influence more broadly: a canceled feature, a reprioritized backlog item, or a stakeholder who changed their position. Any documented consequence beats a study that only produced a report nobody acted on.
