Gallery Director
[Gallery name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

My studio practice sits in mixed media, mostly large-format textile and paint pieces built from reclaimed fabric, and this year that work sold through six shows across two states with a wait list forming for new commissions. I'm reaching out about representation at [Gallery name] because your roster already includes artists working in reclaimed and textile media, and I'd rather show alongside people asking similar questions than stand apart from them.

In the past 18 months I've completed 14 pieces for a combination of gallery sales and private commissions, priced from $800 to $6,500, and a solo show at a community arts space drew just over 400 visitors over three weekends. I also teach a monthly textile workshop capped at 12 students that has run full for the past year.

I document every piece for a public archive, keep consistent framing and shipping specs so galleries can move work quickly, and I meet deadlines for open calls and juried shows without needing reminders. I work in fiber, reclaimed textile, acrylic and mixed media, and I'm equally comfortable talking with a collector about a commission as I am prepping crates for a shipment.

I'd love to send a current portfolio and studio images for [Gallery name] to review, and I'm glad to visit in person if that's useful. Thank you for looking at new work.

Warm regards,

Avery Robinson

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

    States medium and momentum together

Gallery directors get flooded with general passion statements from artists. Naming the medium, the show count and an actual wait list proves demand for this work already exists.

  2. Paragraph 2

Prices and attendance instead of vague success

A commission price range and a real visitor count let a gallery director judge market fit immediately, which matters more to them than a description of the artist's style.

  3. Paragraph 3

Shows the unglamorous professionalism galleries need

Documentation, consistent framing and deadline reliability are what keep a gallery relationship going after the first sale. Naming them signals this artist is easy to work with, not just talented.

Questions about artist cover letters

Do working artists need a cover letter to approach a gallery?

Most galleries call it an inquiry or submission letter rather than a cover letter, but the job is the same: a short, specific note that gets a director to open the attached portfolio. Lead with your medium and current momentum, not a statement about your passion for art.

Should I mention my prices when approaching a gallery?

A price range for recent sales or commissions is useful context, since it tells the gallery where your work sits in the market and whether it fits their program. You do not need exact figures for every piece, just a realistic range.

What if I don't have gallery sales yet, only commissions or online sales?

List them honestly and specifically: number of pieces sold, price range, and where, whether that's a website, a market, or direct commissions. Galleries care more about evidence that people pay for your work than which channel it came through.

How long should an artist's gallery inquiry letter be?

Keep it under one page and three or four short paragraphs: what you make, recent momentum, why this gallery specifically, and what you're sending or offering to send next. Directors are deciding whether to open a portfolio, not reading a full biography.
