Head of Data Architecture
[Company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

At Ashcombe Financial Group in Charlotte I own the enterprise data model for a nine-business-unit organization, the kind of role where one undocumented schema change can break reporting for months. I'm applying for the Data Architect opening at [Company name] because your team is far enough into a lakehouse migration that governance, not just modeling, is clearly part of the job.

The result I'm proudest of is collapsing fourteen duplicate customer data stores into a single golden record, which took an 18-month governance push as much as a technical one. I'm also leading the architecture for a three-year migration off Teradata onto a Snowflake lakehouse, aligning six engineering teams around one shared data contract standard, and our metadata catalog now covers more than 400 critical data elements.

I chair a monthly data governance council across nine business units, resolving roughly a dozen data definition conflicts a quarter, and I hold the CDMP and TOGAF 9 certifications alongside SnowPro Advanced: Data Architect. Last year I presented a build-versus-buy analysis to our CDO that informed a $1.2 million MDM platform investment.

I'd welcome the chance to talk through the Teradata-to-Snowflake migration and hear where [Company name]'s own data model needs the most attention. I'm glad to walk through the governance framework in an interview whenever suits your schedule. Thank you for considering my application.

With appreciation,

Priya Johnson, CDMP

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

Names the org scale and the real risk

Enterprise architecture buyers care about blast radius. Naming nine business units and what breaks when governance is skipped shows this candidate understands the stakes before any technology is mentioned.

  2. Paragraph 2

One consolidation story, told with numbers

Fourteen data stores into one golden record is concrete and hard to fake. Naming the migration's team count and catalog size adds scope without turning the paragraph into a full resume.

  3. Paragraph 3

Certifications follow a governance track record

CDMP and TOGAF land differently after a council story with a resolved-conflict count. The $1.2 million detail shows this candidate's recommendations reach the CDO, not just the engineering team.

Questions about data architect cover letters

How is a data architect cover letter different from a data engineer's?

It emphasizes design decisions and governance scope instead of implementation work. Describe the models and standards you set and the teams that adopted them, rather than pipelines you built, since that distinction is what reviewers screen for first.

Should I mention frameworks like TOGAF or Kimball in my cover letter?

Only if you pair the framework name with an outcome, such as domains modeled or systems consolidated. A bare mention of a methodology reads as a keyword; an outcome attached to it reads as evidence you've actually applied it.

How much stakeholder work should I describe in a data architect cover letter?

A meaningful amount. Architecture only works if teams adopt your standards, so describe how many teams, business units, or executives you've aligned around a decision, not just the decision itself.
