Dear [Hiring manager's name],
My sophomore English students at Fernwood High School read six full novels a year, not excerpts, and I built that reading list myself after our old anthology-based curriculum left most students unable to name a book they'd actually finished. I'm applying for the English Teacher opening at [School name] because your department is piloting a similar full-text approach, and I want to help prove it works district-wide.
Since I switched to full-text units with choice-based independent reading built in, the share of my students who finished at least four books during the year rose from 35% to 78%, and our state English language arts proficiency rate climbed from 61% to 74% over three years. I also coach 12 students a year through a spring research paper that culminates in a public presentation night, now in its fourth year.
I hold a state secondary English teaching license and use a workshop model, mini-lessons followed by independent reading and writing time, rather than lecture-and-worksheet days. I differentiate texts by lexile band while keeping the whole class reading a common core novel together, and I run weekly Socratic seminars that put discussion in students' hands instead of mine.
I'd welcome the opportunity to bring that same full-text approach to [School name] and to talk with you about your department's current pilot. I'm glad to share my reading list or sit in on a planning meeting. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Casey Young
