Plan your academic CV sections

Read the application instructions first. A useful outline is contact details, research interests or a short profile, education, academic appointments, research experience, publications, teaching, presentations, funding, and service. Include only sections that apply to you.

For a research role, give the research record room near the top. For a teaching role, make teaching responsibilities and relevant evidence easy to find. An early-career CV can be shorter; you do not need to fill every possible section.

Enter publications and funding accurately

Write complete citations using the convention requested by the institution or appropriate to your field. Preserve author order and identify your own contribution where needed. Keep published work, accepted work, and work still under review clearly separated. Do not label a submission as accepted.

For funding, state the project, funder, dates, and your actual role. Distinguish an award you received from a project you supported. Add amounts only when accurate and appropriate to disclose.

Check the complete CV before downloading

Review section order, long citations, page breaks, and contact details in the preview. Follow any page limit, file format, or document naming rule in the application. For an industry application, consider a shorter resume focused on relevant work rather than sending an academic CV by default.

An academic CV gives more space to education and scholarly work, such as research, teaching, publications, and service. A resume usually selects experience for a particular job. Follow the application instructions on length and required sections.
