Chief Actuary
[Insurance company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

I currently rebuild the quarterly loss development triangles for the commercial auto and general liability lines at a mid-size P&C carrier, work that cut our adverse reserve development by $2.1 million a year. I'm applying for your Actuary opening because I want to keep doing reserving and pricing work where the model's assumptions actually get questioned by underwriting and finance, not just filed away.

I built a GLM pricing model across 1.2 million in-force policies that improved our loss ratio prediction accuracy by 8 percentage points over the prior model, and I led a reinsurance treaty renewal analysis covering $180 million in ceded premium that identified $4.5 million in avoidable ceding commission.

I hold the ASA credential, I'm three exams into the FSA, and I present quarterly reserve reviews directly to our CFO and underwriting leadership, translating model assumptions into plain-language risk narratives. I also mentor two actuarial analysts studying for their SOA preliminary exams, both of whom passed on the first attempt this year.

I'd welcome the chance to bring that reserving and pricing work to [Insurance company name]'s book, whatever lines of business your team is currently focused on. I'm available for an interview at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Arjun Chen, ASA

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

Names the lines of business and a dollar result

Commercial auto, general liability and a $2.1 million reserve improvement tell a chief actuary exactly what this candidate has owned, not just studied.

  2. Paragraph 2

Pairs a pricing model with a reinsurance result

An 8-point accuracy gain and a $4.5 million ceding commission finding cover two different actuarial functions in one paragraph, proving range across pricing and reinsurance.

  3. Paragraph 3

    States exam progress precisely

ASA credential plus three FSA exams gives a hiring actuary an exact read on career stage, which matters more here than in almost any other finance role.

Questions about actuary cover letters

How should I state my exam progress in an actuary cover letter?

Precisely. Name your credential if you hold one, such as ASA, FSA, ACAS, or FCAS, or the exact number of exams passed toward it, including VEE status. Hiring actuaries screen exam progress before reading further, and vague phrasing reads as evasive.

Should an actuary cover letter include technical detail about a model?

A one-sentence description of the model type and its dollar or loss-ratio impact is enough, such as a GLM pricing model or a reserve triangle rebuild. Save the methodology walkthrough for the interview; the letter needs the outcome, not the derivation.

How long should an actuary cover letter be?

Three tight paragraphs, roughly 300 words total: a specific reason you are interested in this line of business, one or two quantified modeling results, and a concrete first project. Actuarial hiring managers value the same precision in the letter as in a model.
