Dear [Hiring manager's name],
I teach two sections of first-year composition and one of public speaking each semester at Kittery Community College, alongside my work writing and coaching executive communication for a mid-sized consulting firm. I'm applying for the adjunct opening in your English department because I want a program where a working writer's outside experience is treated as a teaching asset instead of a scheduling inconvenience.
Last year 91% of my composition students passed with a C or better, up from 76% the year before I restructured the course around short, graded drafts instead of one large paper due at the end. My public speaking sections now include a mandatory video self-review, which cut the number of students who froze during their final presentation from roughly a third to almost none.
I grade in Canvas, hold regular office hours by video for students who commute, and build every rubric around the same plain-language standard I use when I edit executive speeches for clients. I also mentor two newer adjuncts each term on pacing a four-day-a-week class without burning out mid-semester.
I'd welcome the chance to talk about your department's composition sequence and how my outside writing work could strengthen it at [College name]. I can meet at whatever time works around your committee's schedule.
Best regards,
Sage Robinson
