Hiring Manager, Business Development Team
[Company name]
[City, State]

Dear [Hiring manager's name],

For the past eighteen months I've answered customer support tickets at [Company name], and I'd like to move that same product knowledge onto the Business Development team as a Sales Development Representative. I already know our product, our common objections, and where our documentation falls short, most of what a new external hire would spend months learning.

I currently close around 50 tickets a day while holding a 4.8 out of 5 customer satisfaction score, and I've cross-trained three teammates on our escalation process so the whole team's average resolution time dropped alongside mine. When product asked for volunteers to pilot a new onboarding flow last quarter, I was one of three reps who tested it and wrote up the feedback that shaped the final version.

Working support has taught me how customers actually talk about their problems, not how we assume they will, which is exactly the instinct a sales conversation needs. I've started shadowing two sales development reps on their calls during slow ticket hours and taken a self-paced consultative selling course on my own time to prepare for a move like this one.

I'd welcome the chance to talk with the Business Development team about an open Sales Development Representative role and how eighteen months of support experience would translate. I'm glad to loop in my current manager whenever it's useful, and I remain fully committed to my ticket queue until any transition is settled.

Sincerely,

Arjun Lewis

Why this letter works

  1. Paragraph 1

    States the internal-transfer premise immediately

An internal hiring manager doesn't need convincing that the culture fits; naming his current team and tenure in the first sentence gets straight to the real question, whether his product knowledge transfers.

  2. Paragraph 2

Uses support metrics a sales manager already trusts

A CSAT score and a cross-team training result are numbers a hiring manager inside the same company can verify in an afternoon, which makes them more persuasive than an external resume claim.

  3. Paragraph 3

    Shows self-directed preparation before asking

Shadowing sales calls and completing a selling course on his own time, before the transfer is even approved, proves initiative in a way that's hard to fake and easy for an internal manager to notice.

Questions about internal position cover letters

Should an internal cover letter sound different from an external one?

Yes. Skip the organization overview and general enthusiasm, since the hiring manager already knows it, and spend the space on what you've done in your current role and exactly how it applies to the new one.

Do I need to tell my manager before applying internally?

Check your company's internal mobility policy first, since many require notifying your manager at a certain stage. Mentioning in the letter that you're willing to loop them in shows good faith even if a rule doesn't strictly require it.

How do I address staying committed to my current role during the process?

One sentence is enough, stating that you'll fulfill your current responsibilities through any transition. It reassures the new manager you won't leave your old team stranded, which matters more internally than externally.

What if the new role is in a completely different department?

Focus on the transferable skills and any self-directed steps you've already taken to prepare, such as shadowing, a course, or a cross-team project. Internal hiring managers weigh initiative and cultural trust heavily, often more than a perfect skills match.
