Dear [Hiring manager's name],
I teach Algebra II and Geometry to about 130 students across five sections at a school where more than a third qualify for free or reduced lunch, and I've built my classroom around the idea that struggling with a hard problem out loud is normal, not something to hide. Most of them arrive already convinced they're 'not a math person,' and changing that belief matters to me as much as the curriculum itself. I want to bring that classroom culture to [School name]'s math department.
Two years ago our Algebra II pass rate on the state end-of-course exam sat at 68%. I restructured the course around weekly low-stakes quizzes with same-day reteach groups instead of one high-stakes midterm, and the pass rate climbed to 87% over two years while failing grades in the course dropped by half.
I use Desmos and ALEKS daily, I co-sponsor our Mathletes team, which placed third regionally last spring, and I mentor two student teachers each year from a nearby university's certification program, each one arriving nervous about classroom management and leaving with a semester's worth of practice running a full room. I also built the department's shared reteach bank, now used by all four Algebra II teachers.
I'd welcome the chance to bring that same reteach model to [School name] and would be glad to share a sample unit plan at an interview. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Morgan Lopez
