An import reconstructs editable content from a finished document. It may not preserve the original template or every section boundary. Keep the original PDF and verify the imported facts before editing.

- An import reconstructs editable content from a finished document.
- Usually the new editor applies its own layout. Focus first on preserving accurate content, then choose and inspect the new format.
A practical checklist
Open the PDF and check whether its text can be selected. Import through the product’s supported upload flow, then compare contact details, roles, employers, dates, education and skills. Look for paragraphs joined across columns and bullets split into separate fields. Correct the structure before choosing a new layout. If extraction is unreliable, paste corrected text by section instead. Pay particular attention to an employer name being mistaken for a role title, or dates being attached to the next section.
Mistakes and limits to keep in mind
A scan may need OCR or manual transcription first. Do not assume that a successful upload means every field was read correctly. Never discard the source until the new file has been exported and checked.
Compare structure before polishing the layout
After importing, review each role as a unit: title, employer, dates and bullets. Check whether education and certifications landed in the correct sections, and whether multiple columns were combined in the wrong order. Correct those boundaries before choosing a new template.
Inspect links and punctuation as well as prose. A visually small extraction error in an email address matters more than a cosmetic difference in spacing. Keep the original PDF available for comparison throughout the process.
Use a text path when extraction remains unreliable
If repeated imports produce the same structural error, copy selectable text into a plain-text editor and repair its order. If the file is a scan, transcribe it or use a trusted OCR workflow and verify the result. Paste the corrected sections into the builder’s supported input flow.
Rebuilding the layout can be faster and safer than trying to preserve a complex design exactly. A successful import means you have a starting point, not that every fact or page break has been verified.
