Your engineering degree establishes your course of study. Your resume must also show what you can build, investigate or improve. For a BTech fresher applying in India, the strongest material may be a final-year project, a laboratory investigation, an internship or a practical contribution to a student team. Start with the role requirements and choose evidence that helps a reader judge your own work.
| Application need | Useful evidence | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Development role | Code you authored, tests and a working demonstration | A list of every programming language from your syllabus |
| Core engineering role | Drawings, experiments, calculations or supervised field work | Presenting a laboratory simulation as industrial deployment |
| Campus process | Current placement instructions and exact education records | Assuming an attractive template replaces a required format |
Pick a role before choosing skills
Choose a target such as software development, mechanical design, electrical testing or civil site coordination. The same degree can support several paths, but a single unfocused resume makes the reader do the matching. Highlight tools you actually used for the advertised work. Separate classroom exposure from independent use. An introductory course does not establish professional proficiency.
Make the final-year project inspectable
State the problem, your contribution, the method and the result you can support. A team project needs a clear boundary around your part. Include a repository, report or demonstration only when you may share it and the link works without private access. If results were measured in a classroom test, name that setting rather than implying commercial deployment.
Fictional teaching example: “Implemented sensor logging for a four-person irrigation prototype; compared moisture readings against manual measurements in the college laboratory.” This communicates ownership and a test method without inventing customers, revenue or performance gains. Replace it with your own evidence; do not copy the achievement.
Keep education precise
Write the degree and branch as recorded by your institution. Include graduation status and the expected completion date if still studying. Show CGPA with its original scale. Add school marks when the application asks for them or they materially clarify eligibility; use the application form for detailed mandatory fields. Never convert a CGPA into percentage using an internet rule that your institution has not adopted.
Review the file and the application separately
Check the employer notice for eligibility and the college placement office for a required format. A builder cannot establish either. In a free-choice application, put the most relevant evidence early, use understandable section headings and inspect the exported file. Check that project links open, dates agree with the form and a copied text version reads in the intended order.
For a concrete example, IIT Madras’s current student placement instructions require its prescribed resume format and genuine information. That is an institution-specific rule, not a format requirement for every BTech applicant in India.
