When an employer in India does not prescribe a format, use a clear working structure and adapt it to the role. This guide offers starting points for section order, page length, personal details, grades and file choice. These are writing recommendations, not national hiring rules. A current college, government or employer instruction takes priority.
Start here
- Put the strongest relevant evidence early, whether it is work, education or a project.
- Guul’s India default is A4; inspect the actual export and follow any page limit.
- Add personal information only with a reason tied to the application.
- Show grades with their original scale and follow a prescribed format when one applies.
| Applicant | Possible section order | Length | Scores to show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresher without an internship | Education, relevant projects, skills | Start with one readable page | Requested or relevant qualifications, each with its scale |
| Fresher with an internship or training | Put the strongest relevant education or practical work first | Start with one readable page | Requested or relevant qualifications, each with its scale |
| Applicant with relevant work | Experience, skills, education | Use the space relevant evidence needs within the limit | Requested or relevant results |
| Applicant with extensive relevant work | Optional profile, experience, skills, education | Consider two pages when permitted | Requested or relevant results |
| Returning after a break | Relevant experience and current preparation; optional short break explanation | Follow the limit and preserve readability | Requested or relevant results |
| Campus, government or employer form | The prescribed order | As instructed | The fields the form requests |
Section order for freshers
A fresher has little or no paid work, so the page should open with what a reader can check quickly: your qualification and your practical work. Start with your name, phone, email and city, plus a LinkedIn or portfolio link if it shows real work. Add a two- or three-line summary that names the role you want; skip it if it would only say you are hardworking. Then give education, newest first, followed by projects, internships and industrial training, then skills, then certifications and positions of responsibility that relate to the job.
If an internship is closer to the job than any project, move it above projects. A career objective, hobbies and a declaration add little on an open-format resume, so leave them out unless the application asks for them.
Section order for experienced applicants
Put relevant work before education when it provides the strongest evidence for the role. A useful order is contact details, an optional short profile, work experience with the most recent role first, relevant skills, education and certifications. Keep each employer, title and month-and-year date range clear. Give important work more space and shorten repetition.
Include school marks or detailed academic information when required or useful. Handle compensation, notice period and availability through the channel the employer specifies; do not assume every application expects them in the resume header.
Paper size and number of pages
Guul uses A4 by default for India. Confirm that the exported file has the intended paper size and inspect the print preview if a printed copy is required; printer scaling settings can affect the result.
A readable one-page draft is a useful starting point for limited experience. Add a second page when relevant evidence needs the space and the application permits it. Academic or prescribed documents may need a different structure. Remove repetition before shrinking the text, and follow any stated page limit.
Personal details are optional
Start with the contact details needed for the application. Do not add date of birth, gender, marital status, nationality, religion, family details or a photograph solely because a sample includes them. Check a specific request and use the designated form when personal information is required. Keep identity numbers, financial details and unnecessary private information out of broadly shared files.
In Guul, date of birth, marital status and nationality are optional fields for India. They appear when you add them, together on one line in the header. Optional product fields do not determine an employer’s requirements.
Write every score with its scale
Write the grade and scale shown by your institution. A percentage and a CGPA are different measures. If a conversion is requested, use the institution’s official method and identify it; do not apply an internet rule from another university.
Include degree and school results when the application requests them or they add useful context. Label pending results and expected completion dates accurately rather than inventing a score. Guul displays CGPA and percentage with their labels; check that the value and scale match your records.
PDF or Word
Send the file type the posting requests. If you choose PDF, inspect the actual export for page breaks, text and links. If Word is requested, inspect that file separately because editable documents can reflow between applications. The file extension alone does not guarantee parsing or identical display everywhere.
Name the file clearly and check it before uploading. Guul provides PDF and editable Word exports from your resume content, but the Word layout can differ from the PDF. Keep the source resume so later updates do not depend on reconstructing an export.
When a campus, government or employer format replaces this
Everything above applies when you choose the format. It does not apply when someone else has chosen it. A college placement cell may require its own template or a profile on its placement portal. A government or PSU notice sets its own application form and list of documents. Some employers ask you to fill a profile on their careers site and treat the resume as an attachment.
In those cases, complete the prescribed format exactly, including fields you would leave off your own resume, such as date of birth or category. Keep your open-format resume for off-campus applications, referrals and job portals, and make sure both carry the same dates, titles and scores.
