The word CV can refer to a concise job application or a fuller academic record. For an application in India, read the notice to decide which is wanted and whether it supplies a format or page limit. This guide offers structures for both purposes and explains how to handle an explicit request for biodata without assuming one rule applies to every employer.
Start here
- Read the request to distinguish a focused job document from an academic CV.
- Academic applications may ask for research, publications and teaching in a prescribed format.
- Follow the actual fields when biodata is requested.
- Keep facts consistent across every document you submit.
| The request | Possible document | Length | Emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relevant employment and skills | A focused job resume or CV | Follow the limit; keep it readable | Relevant work, or education and projects |
| Research, teaching and publications | An academic CV | As specified by the recipient | Relevant academic record |
| A research institute or fellowship supplies a format | Its requested CV or form | As the notice specifies | The fields requested |
| An employer explicitly asks for biodata | The requested biodata or supplied form | As requested | Only the required and relevant fields |
| A government or PSU notice prescribes a form | The official application form | As prescribed | The form’s own fields |
How to tell which CV the reader wants
Read the requested fields and attachments. A document focused on relevant work, skills and qualifications can use a resume structure. A request for research, publications, teaching or academic service may need an academic CV. MIT’s career guidance explains the distinction between these purposes.
Follow the actual notice and any supplied form. If the requested scope is unclear, seek clarification instead of assuming the recipient will request missing material later.
Job CV structure, which is a resume
Start with clear contact details. Use a short profile only when it helps explain your target. Put relevant work first when it is your strongest evidence; a fresher may lead with education and practical projects. Keep roles, employers, dates and qualifications accurate, and show grades with their original scale.
A one-page draft is a useful starting point for limited experience, with more space when relevant evidence and the application permit it. Include publications or conferences when they matter to the role. Follow the stated file type and page limit.
Academic CV structure
Use the institution’s requested format when one is supplied. Otherwise organise the relevant academic record clearly: education, research roles and projects, publications, presentations, teaching, funding and service. Add qualification tests, supervisors or referees when requested or relevant, with accurate dates and status.
Choose length from the requested record and any limit, not a fixed rule for all PhD graduates. Keep unrelated material brief, but provide school marks or other fields when the application expressly requires them.
List publications so a committee can find them
Use a consistent citation style and enough accurate information for a reader to locate each work, including the published author order, title, venue, date and DOI when available. Keep journal articles, conference papers, chapters and preprints distinguishable.
Label submitted, under-review, accepted and published work according to its actual current status. Check any indexing or publication claim against the relevant record rather than assuming a committee cannot verify it.
When a biodata is the better answer
When an employer requests biodata, read its requested fields, format and length. The word alone does not establish that a photo, full address or other personal detail is necessary. Use a provided form when required and seek clarification if the request is unclear.
Keep names, dates, qualifications and employment facts consistent across the documents you submit. Do not rewrite the same fact differently merely because one document is called a CV and another is called a resume.
Preparing either version in Guul
A job CV is a resume, so you can write one in Guul's builder or import the file you already have. The checker explains each finding, you can tailor the document to a job description, and you can export PDF or Word on A4. For an academic CV, first check whether the university or funder supplies its own form or format, since some do. Guul does not format citations for you, so check each reference against the style the notice names before you send it.
